MET Office issue AMBER weather warning

Dear councillors and colleagues

The Met Office has issued an AMBER weather warning for heavy rainfall in our area for the period6pm tonight until 3pm tomorrow.  The heaviest rain is forecast to be between midnight and 6am.  AMBER warnings mean that there is a medium likelihood of disruption as a result of the weather and is a trigger to take preparatory actions.

The council has implemented a number of measures to prepare for any impact from the heavy rain:

·         Colas are on standby to respond throughout the night to any surface flooding issues caused by the rain.  A senior manager from the Council – Jane Tume, the PFI manager – will be at Colas from midnight to direct their work and call out other staff if the situation needs it.
·         The Transport and Environment Service incident room will be open from 6am to supplement the overnight response and deal with any issues for the rush hour.
·         Transport and Environment Service have made arrangements to check play area safety tomorrow
·         Southern Water are aware of the weather warning and are making appropriate arrangements to cover their areas of responsibility
·         In addition to the normal out of hours service,  a member of the Civil Contingencies Unit will be in at 6am.
·         The weather alert has been sent to all service business continuity co-ordinators and other staff whose service delivery may be affected

Hampshire Constabulary will be issuing driver safety messages if required.

I’ll send updates tomorrow (hopefully not during the middle of the night!!).

Regards

Cindy Jones
Civil Contingencies Manager
