Dear Councillors
As the Met Office has now issued an amber weather warning for snow tomorrow, which looks likely to affect Portsmouth, services are continuing with preparations to keep the city moving and we want to make sure you have all the most up-to-date information.
Colas will be salting, gritting, and manually removing ice and snow on a priority basis throughout Portsmouth, and will continue to work through the night, focusing first on the priority one and two routes. Colas staff will also clear priority footpaths tomorrow as necessary tomorrow, and staff will be diverted from other areas if needed to help clear snow and keep things moving.
You can find a map showing the routes that will be treated on our website. The website will also be updated regularly with all the latest information about changes to any services affected by the weather and, should any schools close, will include an up-to-date list of school closures. All information will be linked from a banner on the front page.
Staff in adult social care are checking on their most vulnerable service users and are making contingency plans for services like meals on wheels. Information that went out to staff this afternoon included a request for volunteers with 4x4 to come forwards to help ensure services keep moving if the need arises, particularly for services like meals on wheels.
Housing management have made their usual preparations to keep their areas safe, including gritting entrances to sheltered blocks and having teams on stand-by to clear snow from footpaths.
Waste crews made collections at flats in the Portsdown Hill area earlier today in anticipation of conditions that may make collections in the area difficult tomorrow. The crews will be starting earlier tomorrow, with the first collections at 6am, in an effort to carry out as many refuse and recycling collections as they can before the anticipated snowfall.
We are issuing a release to the media on the preparations, and we'll continue to provide them with updates. We will also be keeping information about affected services updated on our website, with a link from the home page. We will also be providing information via our facebook page and twitter feed (on facebook at www.facebook.com/portsmouthcitycouncil or on twitter at www.twitter.com/portsmouthtoday) and we'll retweet information from partner organisations, including the Police.
I hope that is helpful. We'll provide you with another update tomorrow.
Kind regards
Charlotte
