Resident's parking not under threat

It was reported in the News this week that the Council was considering scrapping residents parking schemes, but the Councillor responsible for making the decision on any chances has sent an email making clear that his quote was taken out of context.

Cllr Fazackarley said the Council will review the 30 schemes around the City and that there are no plans to scrap them. I have copied his email below.

"Dear Colleagues,

I felt it appropriate to issue this email to clarify matters following the News story on Monday regarding Residents Parking.

The News headline stating that Residents' Parking could be axed was somewhat strong and misleading as I certainly do not have any plans to axe the scheme. I made comment at the last T&T Decision meeting to the fact that I have instructed senior traffic officers to undertake a comprehensive review of Residents' Parking following numerous proposals, suggestions, criticisms etc from residents, businesses and groups over recent years regarding the scheme.

Since Residents' Parking was introduced back in 1999 we have seen it grown to 30 areas across the city with more in the pipeline. It has been an item subject to review by Scrutiny Co in the past but I feel it is now the time for a more comprehensive review and hence my instructions to this effect.

What I sought to explain in my response to deputations at the last T&T meeting was that I want it to be a thorough review and to look at all options as I believe there are areas in which improvements can be made and some of the comments we have received have been useful and constructive. Perhaps I should have been more specific and precise in my use of words as this has clearly given the News the opportunity to place the headline in such a way.

If any colleagues require further clarification please feel free to get back to me and if you receive contact from residents expressing concerns about the future of Residents' Parking I am happy to respond to these if you wish to forward these on to me.

Best regards,

Cllr Jason Fazackarley
Cabinet member for Traffic & Transportation"
