Portsmouth City Council is proposing to press ahead with the new residents parking area around the Mountbatten Centre.
The proposal is likely to include a scheme between Connaught Road and Ophir Road.
At the northern end - Brunel Rd, Hartley Rd, Kipling Rd, Magdalen Rd, Meredith Rd, Telford Rd, Vita Rd the results are:
84 (40%) in favour and 126 (60%) against.
The rest of the roads - Connaught Rd, Gladys Ave, London Ave, Munster Rd, North End Ave, Ophir Rd, Oriel Rd, Shadwell Rd, Wadham Rd the results are:
262 (62%) in favour and 161 (38%) against.
The main causes of the parking problems, as indicated by residents, are commercial vehicles and households having too many cars. Therefore it is unlikely that the traditional parking scheme would be successful, as residents would be paying for permits and the number of vehicles not necessarily be reduced.
We should see what comes out of the formal consultation, but for Hartley Road and the roads northwards a different solution may be needed that specifically targets commercial vehicles and/or vehicles of a certain type or height.
The move has been confirmed to this blog, by local Councillor Alistair Thompson, who said that the Council was looking at creating a smaller scheme than was initially advertised to reflect opposition to the proposal in the northern section.
“Hopefully by doing this, the Council will address the genuine concerns of local residents and can explore other options for the roads that are likely not to be covered by the proposed scheme.” He said.
The formal consultation gives everyone the opportunity to comment on an actual scheme, the design of which is based on the survey results.
